Women’s Tennis Gets First-Ever Win over Rockhurst, 7-2

WICHITA – The Newman women's tennis team picked up its first-ever win over Rockhurst, winning 7-2 on Friday afternoon (Feb. 15) at West Genesis. The win is the first of the spring for the Lady Jets and they are now 5-1 in duals this season.
 
The Lady Jets won all three doubles matches. The duo of Kirstie Symon and Taylor Jordan took down Karsyn Betts and Christine Schatz, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles. The No. 2 doubles match was the closest of the three doubles matches, but the Lady Jets prevailed, 8-6. Lisa Pleskan and Carissa Villaflor teamed up to get the win. At No. 3 doubles, Courtney Dold and Alajandra Hernandez won 8-2.
 
Newman won four of the six singles matches. Symon defeated Betts, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 1 singles, and Pleskan won 6-0, 6-3 over Schatz at No. 2 singles. Taylor won a three-set match over Kim Vrugteveen at No. 4 singles. Taylor won the first set 6-4 then dropped set two to Vrugteveen, 6-3. In the third set, Taylor won 6-2 to take the match. Jessica Brown also got a win at singles, defeating Abby Kayser at No. 6 singles.
 
The Lady Jets return to the court tomorrow (Feb. 16) against Tabor College. The match starts at 2 p.m. at West Genesis.
