Lady Jets Clinch Spot in Heartland Tournament with 53-45 Win

Box Score AUSTIN, Texas – The Newman women's basketball team clinched a spot in the Heartland Conference Tournament with a 53-45 victory at St. Edward's on Saturday afternoon (March 2). The Lady Jets end the regular season at 11-15 overall and tied for third in the Heartland with a 6-6 record.
 
The Lady Jets led 20-17 after a low scoring first half. Newman took control of the game early in the second half, going on a 9-1 run in the first 2:39 of the second stanza to go up 29-18. During the run, NU got layups from Sumayyah Muhammad, Kianna Flannagan and Alexandra Ciabattoni. The Lady Jets led the rest of the way with the advantage never falling below six points. Newman went up 16 points, 43-27, at the 9:46 mark on a jumper from Cheniqwa Banks. The margin was the largest lead of the game for NU. The Lady Jets cruised to the 53-45 win.
 
Flannagan had game highs in points (16), rebounds (nine) and assists (five). Banks scored 12 points, and Ciabattoni added 10 points.
 
The Lady Jets shot 20-of-50 from the field (40 percent), and were 9-of-11 (81.8 percent) from the free throw line. The Hilltoppers were limited to only 14-of-56 from the field (30.4 percent) and were 13-of-20 from the line (65 percent). The Lady Jets held a 39-to-29 rebounding advantage.
 
Newman continues its season in the Heartland Conference Tournament, hosted by UTPB, which won the regular season Heartland Conference title. The semifinals will be played on Friday (March 8) with the tournament championship scheduled for Saturday (March 9).
