Box Score WICHITA – The Newman women's basketball team won its fourth straight game with a 57-51 victory over Arkansas-Fort Smith on Saturday (Jan. 11) at Fugate Gymnasium. The Lady Jets moved to 9-7 and 6-4 in the Heartland Conference.
After a 3-pointer from
Shakira Raynor right before halftime put the Lady Jets up three, 30-27, the Lady Jets gained the momentum and went up 10 points midway through the second half.
Alexandra Ciabattoni made a layup at 10:02 for a 49-39 NU advantage, its largest of the game.
The Lions responded with a 7-0 run in the next 4 minutes for a 49-46 score. An UAFS jumper cut the lead to one, 52-51 at the 3:38 mark.
NU ended the game with a 5-0 run – all five points coming from Ciabattoni. A layup at 2:49 put the Lady Jets up 54-51, and Ciabattoni hit three free throws in the final 35 seconds to seal the win.
Ciabattoni had a huge game, totaling a double-double of 23 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. She added three blocks, two assists and one steal. She scored 17 of the 23 points and grabbed 12 of the 16 rebounds in the second half. Ramelb tallied 10 points, and
Shekeira Copeland pulled down 12 rebounds.
The NU defense held UAFS to 27 percent (17-63) shooting in the game, including 17.4 percent (4-23) from 3-point range. The 27 percent was the lowest the NU defense has held an opponent this season.
