Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma Christian ended the game on a 12-1 run to take a 62-56 win over the Newman women's basketball team on Saturday (Jan. 18) at the Eagles' Nest. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak as the Lady Jets dropped to 9-8 and 6-5 in the Heartland Conference.
NU went up 55-50 with 6:04 remaining on a layup from
Shekeira Copeland. The basket would be the final field goal for NU in the game.
Two straight OC field goals cut the margin to one at 55-54 with 4:24 left. Copeland put the Lady Jets up two, 56-54, with 4:06 remaining, making 1-of-2 free throws.
OC tied the game at the 2:39 mark as a McKenzie Stanford layup made it 56-56. For the first time in the game, the Eagles took the lead with two free throws at 2:04 for a 58-56 advantage. OC's Logan McKee hit a 3-pointer with 1:18 left to a five-point Eagles' lead at 61-56.
After two missed field goals from NU in the final minute, OC made 1-of-2 free throws for the final 62-56 score.
In the final 6:04 of the game, the Lady Jets struggled, going 0-of-9 from the field, including 0-for-4 from 3.
After a 7-7 start, the Lady Jets pulled out to a 12-point advantage with a 16-4 that included three 3-pointers from
Shakira Raynor. Raynor made it 13-7 with a 3 at the 13:17 mark, and hit her second 3 at the 12:07 mark for an 18-9 score. Her final 3 came at the 10:38 mark for a 23-11 score.
NU led 35-27 at halftime. After an OC 3-pointer to start the second half, the Lady Jets scored six unanswered points for a 41-30 advantage, their largest lead of the second half. Copeland made two field goals during the run, and
Cheniqwa Banks added one basket.
The Eagles cut the deficit to two, 44-42, with 13:19 remaining, however, Banks responded with a 3 to push the Lady Jet lead back to five, 47-42, with 12:14 left. The two teams traded baskets and the NU advantage remained five until the 6:04 mark when the Eagles went on their final run.
Ciabattoni led NU with 17 points. She added two steals and one block. Copeland tallied 13 points and five rebounds. Nearly totaling a double-double was Banks with eight points and nine rebounds. Raynor scored nine points, all in the first half on three 3-pointers.
The Lady Jets return to action on Thursday (Jan. 23) against Lubbock Christian. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. from Fugate Gymnasium.
