Box Score WICHITA – Texas-Permian Basin hit a layup in the final minute and forced a Newman turnover to pull out a 49-44 win over the Jets on Saturday (Dec. 20) at Fugate Gymnasium. The Jets dropped to 3-9 on the season and 0-2 in the Heartland Conference. UTPB moved to 8-2 and 2-0 in the conference.
UTPB's Valerie Barriga hit a driving layup with 56 seconds remaining to take a 46-44 advantage. NU had a chance to tie the score on its possession, but a turnover gave the ball back to the Falcons with 35 seconds left.
Barriga had two free throws with 10 seconds remaining. She hit the first to go up 47-44. However, Barriga missed the second shot, but UTPB's Shaquiri Graham grabbed the offensive rebound to take away NU's last second hopes. The Jets were forced to foul, and Barriga made the two shots to for a 49-44 lead with 5 seconds left.
After being down by seven at the 13:19 mark at 35-28, NU used a 14-2 run to take a 42-37 lead with 4:51 remaining.
Kesha Buckner hit a jumper, and
Brianna Caldwell knocked down a 3 to cut the deficit to two at 35-33 with 10:55 left.
Naomi Rosales tied the score at 35-35 at the 8:23 mark. After two UTPB free throws,
Shakira Raynor hit a 3-pointer. Nuckner made another basket, and Raynor capped the run with a jumper at the 4:51 mark and the Jets in front 42-37.
The Falcons scored seven of the next nine points to tie the score at 44-44 with 2:36 left in the contest.
Barriga scored a game-high 23 points. She was the only player in double figures. The Falcons went 18-of-60 from the field for 30 percent in the game.
Raynor totaled a team-high nine points. Rosales and Buckner each added eight points and six rebounds. The Jets shot 34 percent (18-53) from the field, and 43.5 percent (10-23) in the second half.
The Jets return to action on Jan. 1, 2015 at Texas A&M International in Laredo, Texas. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
