TAMIU Pulls Away for 60-38 Win over Lady Jets

Box Score LAREDO, Texas – The Newman women's basketball team had a hard time getting the offense going as the Lady Jets fell, 60-38, at Texas A&M International on Saturday (Feb. 1). The Lady Jets dropped to 11-10 and 8-7 in the Heartland Conference. The Dustdevils improved to 15-4 and 11-2 in the Heartland Conference.
 
In a low scoring first half, NU went up 18-12 on an Alexandra Ciabattoni basket at the 8:24 mark. The six point advantage was the largest for the Lady Jets.
 
TAMIU ended the first half with a 13-2 run to take a 25-20 lead into halftime.
 
The Lady Jets started the second half with four quick points coming from Ciabattoni to cut the deficit to 25-24 with 18:00 remaining. From there it was all Dustdevils as the home team went on a 24-4 run to open up a 49-29 lead with 8:28 left. TAMIU held on for the 60-38 win.
 
Ciabattoni was the lone Lady Jet in double figures, scoring 14 points on 50 percent (6-12) shooting. No other Lady Jet scored more than four points. Cierra Tjaden led NU with six rebounds and two assists.
 
NU shot 30.9 percent (17-55) from the field, including 10.5 percent (2-19) from 3-point range. The Lady Jets went 2-of-7 (28.6 percent) from the free throw line.
 
TAMIU went 23-of-47 from the field (48.9 percent), including 13-of-21 (61.9 percent) in the second half. Malika Jackson totaled a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds.
 
The Lady Jets return home for two games. NU takes on St. Edward's on Thursday (Feb. 6) at 5:30 p.m. inside Fugate Gymnasium.
