Ciabattoni's Career-High 39 Points Lift NU to 80-75 Win

Box Score GOODWELL, Okla. – Sophomore forward Alexandra Ciabattoni poured in a career-high 39 points to push the Newman women's basketball team to an 80-75 win at Oklahoma Panhandle State. The Lady Jets won their three straight games and the fifth of their last six games. NU improved to 14-10 and 11-7 in the Heartland Conference.
 
Ciabattoni went 13-of-17 from the field, including 1-for-1 from 3-point range. She was a perfect 12-for-12 from the free throw line. The Adelaide, South Australia native, scored 20 points in the first half on 8-of-12 shooting. In the second half, Ciabattoni scored 19 points of 5-of-6 shooting from the field and 8-of-8 shooting from the free throw line. Ciabattoni's previous career high was 30 points scored in the season opener against Rockhurst on Nov. 9, 2013. She added a team-high six rebounds and two steals.
 
Mali Wright also had a career-high in points, scoring 10 in 15 minutes. She was the only other Lady Jet in double figures. Shakira Raynor dished out a team-high four assists.
 
The Lady Jets shot a blistering 63.3 percent (19-30) in the first half as NU pulled out to a 45-33 advantage late in the first half. OPSU's Sarah Johnson hit a late first-half 3-pointer for a 45-36 halftime score.
 
With the Lady Jets up 55-47 with 15:07 remaining, OPSU went on a run to take its largest lead of the second half at 67-64 with 6:09 left in the game.
 
NU responded with an 11-0 run to go up 75-67 at the 2:58 mark, forcing the Aggies to take a timeout. After a layup by Tessa Ramsay pulled NU to within one at 67-66, Ciabattoni scored the next nine Lady Jet points. NU held on for the 80-75 win.
 
For the game, NU shot 56.6 percent (30-53) from the field. The defense held OPSU to 39.3 percent (24-61).
 
The Lady Jets return to the court on Thursday (Feb. 20) at 5:30 p.m. at Arkansas-Fort Smith.
