Women's Tennis' Upset Bid Falls Short at Cameron

LAWTON, Okla. – The Newman women's tennis team's upset bid of No. 49 Cameron University came up short as the Lady Jets fell, 6-3, to Cameron on Saturday (April 12). The Lady Jets, who are ranked No. 6 in the South Central Region, dropped to 19-3
 
No. 1 player Kirstie Symon went 2-0 for NU. In singles, Symon, who is ranked No. 20 in the South Central Region, rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 victor over No. 13-ranked Angie Torres. The duo of Symon and Taylor Jordan went on to win 8-1 at No. 2 doubles.
 
Courtney Dold picked up the third NU victory with a 7-6, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles. In other singles matches, Lisa Pleskan fell to No. 14-ranked Paula Gutierrez-Casas 6-1, 6-0, Jordan dropped a 6-3, 6-0 decision at No. 3 singles, Hillary Hicks lost in straight sets 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4 singles and Carissa Villaflor went down in a close three-set match 6-1, 2-6, 10-5.
 
In the other doubles matches, NU fell, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles as Pleskan and Villaflor lost to the No. 4-ranked team of Florencia Tornero and Gutierrez-Casas. Hicks and Dold lost a close 8-5 match at No. 3 doubles.
 
NU is back in action on Friday (April 18) at Northwest Missouri State at 3 p.m.
