Men’s Tennis Gets First-Ever Win Over Emporia State

EMPORIA, Kan. – Newman men's tennis got its first-ever win over Emporia State, 5-4, on Friday (April 18) at Milton Courts. The Jets moved to 12-10 on the season.
 
After winning only one of the doubles courts, NU used strong play in singles competition to get the victory.
 
Evgeniy Kim and Miguel Bendito picked up the lone win in doubles, winning 8-3 at No. 3 doubles. Max Pyle and Freddy Sanchez lost a very close match at No. 2 doubles, falling 9-8 (7-4).
 
The Jets won four of the six singles courts to get the narrow victory. Nei Dos Santos pulled out a very tight match at No. 2 singles. He dropped the first set, 7-6 (7-2), but then won, 7-6 (7-5) in the second set. He won the third set tiebreaker, 10-5, to notch the victory.
 
At No. 3 and 4 singles, Kim and Sanchez both won in straight sets. Kim cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 win, and Sanchez pulled out to a 6-4, 7-5 victory. Pyle was victorious at No. 6 singles, winning a very close three set match. He won 6-4 in the first set; however, he lost set two, 6-0. Needing a win to take the match, Pyle won the tiebreaker, 10-4, to lift NU to the 5-4 win.
 
The Jets end the regular season on April 22 at Friends at 2:30 p.m. in Wichita.
