SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Newman women's tennis team dropped a tight 5-4 match to UA Fort Smith on Friday (April 25) in the semifinals of the Heartland Conference Tournament. The Lady Jets dropped to 21-4 on the season.
NU found themselves in a huge hole after doubles as the Lady Jets dropped all three courts.
Kirstie Symon and
Taylor Jordan, who are ranked No. 10 in the South Central Region in doubles, fell in a close 8-6 match at No. 1. The No. 3 match was just as close as
Hillary Hicks and
Courtney Dold went down, 8-6.
Lisa Pleskan and
Carissa Villaflor lost, 8-3, at No. 2 doubles.
The Lady Jets dominated early in singles, winning four of the first five matches. With the score tied at 4-4,
Hillary Hicks needed to get the victory at No. 4 singles to give NU the win. After a set one 6-2 victory, Hicks couldn't hang on as she dropped the next two sets by 6-3 scores.
Symon dominated nationally ranked Abby White, who is ranked No. 32 in the country. Symon won in straight sets 6-4, 6-1. Pleskan picked up a three-set win at No. 2 singles. She rolled to a 6-0 set one win then lost set two, 6-2. In the third set, she pulled away for a 6-0 win. Jordan gave NU wins at the first three singles, getting a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles.
Ariana Raga was also victorious, winning 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6 singles.
The Lady Jets finished the year 21-4, their most wins in program history.
