Brianna Caldwell tied a career-high with 23 points to lead the Newman women's basketball team to a 67-52 win over Oklahoma Panhandle State on Saturday (Jan. 10) at Fugate Gymnasium. The Jets went a perfect 2-0 in Heartland Conference play this week and moved to 2-4 in the conference and 5-9 overall.
Caldwell, a redshirt sophomore from Wichita, hit six 3-pointers, and she finished 7-of-12 from the field. The guard added six rebounds, one steals and one assist. The 23 points match a career-high achieved in the season opener in a 52-48 victory over Bethel College on Nov. 14, 2014. She hit seven 3s in that win.
Sophomore
Mali Wright finished with a career-high of 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting. She pulled down six rebounds in 18 minutes.
Kesha Buckner tallied a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds. She filled up the score sheet with four assists, three steals and two blocks.
Senior
Shakira Raynor dished out a game-high seven assists.
Cierra Tjaden had five assists, five points and seven rebounds.
Newman scored the first eight points in the game for an early 8-0 advantage.
DeKendra Ledoux put NU up at 2-0 in the first 13 seconds. Tjaden knocked down a 3-pointer for a 5-0 lead in the first 2 minutes. After Wright went 1-for-2 from the free throw line, Buckner scored for an 8-0 advantage at the 17:42 mark. The Jets never trailed in the contest and led by as many as 25 points in the 67-52 win.
The Jets shot 42.4 percent from the field, including 50 percent (14-28) in the second half. NU went 9-of-23 (39.1 percent) from 3, including a second half performance of 54.6 percent (6-11).
A total of 12 Jets played in the game.
NU held a 46-35 advantage in rebounding. The Jets finished with 20 assists on 25 made baskets.
The Jet defense limited the Aggies to 34.5 percent (20-58) shooting from the field. OPSU scored only 17 points in the first half on 24 percent (6-25) shooting.
OPSU's Kiera Waters scored a team-high 22 points, including four 3s. She added seven rebounds and five assists. Also in double figures was Tatyana Bell with 10 points.
NU is back in action at Oklahoma Christian on Thursday (Jan. 15) at 5:30 p.m. in Oklahoma City, Okla. The Jets play three straight games on the road.
