WICHITA – The Newman women's basketball team returns home tonight (Jan. 29) for a Heartland Conference game against Texas A&M International at 5:30 p.m. inside Fugate Gymnasium. Live stats, video and audio will be available for the contest.
The Jets are currently 6-11 and 3-6 in the Heartland Conference. They won their most recent contest at Rogers State on Saturday. Sophomore
Brianna Caldwell hit two free throws with 5 seconds remaining to lift the Jets to 53-52. NU is currently on a two-game winning streak at home after getting victories against Lubbock Christian and Oklahoma Panhandle State on Jan. 8 and 10. Caldwell leads the Jets in scoring at 10.3 points per game. She has hit 52 3-pointers this season and hits them at a 36.1 percent mark.
Kesha Buckner leads the team in rebounding at 6.1 per game. She has a team-high 53 steals.
The Dustdevils are 8-9 overall and 4-5 in the Heartland Conference. They have lost three straight games on the road, including a 68-42 loss at St. Mary's on Jan. 22. TAMIU defeated Texas-Permian Basin on Jan. 17, but besides that win they have lost four of their last five games. Jessica Prieto averages a team-high 16.4 points and 4.6 assists per game. Jessica Woo pulls down a team-high 6.6 rebounds per game, and she adds 11.4 points per game. Also in double figures are Keiona Mathews at 14 points per game, and Ghazarian Stella at 10.2 points per game.
The two teams met earlier this season in Laredo, Texas on Jan. 1. The Dustdevils pulled away for a 70-52 victory.
Cierra Tjaden scored a game-high 18 points. Buckner had 10 rebounds.
After tonight's game, the Jets welcome St. Mary's to Fugate Gymnasium on Saturday (Jan.31) at 1p.m.
