WICHITA – The Newman women's basketball team plays its first home game of the new year tonight (Jan. 8) at 5:30 p.m. inside Fugate Gymnasium. Video, live stats and audio will be available for the game.
 
NU is seeking its first win in the Heartland Conference, as the Jets are 0-4 to start the conference slate. To start the New Year, NU suffered two losses in Texas at Texas A&M International and St. Mary's. In the 72-54 loss at StMU, Brianna Caldwell scored a team-high 18 points off the bench, and starter Kesha Buckner added 11 points. Cierra Tjaden was the high scorer in the 70-52 setback at TAMIU, totaling 18 points. For the season, Tjaden averages a team-high 9.3 points per game, and Caldwell adds 9.0 points per game.
                      
The Lady Chaps are currently 8-4 and 2-0 in the Heartland Conference. LCU started the conference season with two home wins over TAMIU and St. Mary's. On Dec. 18, the Lady Chaps defeated TAMIU, 87-68, and on Dec. 20, LCU won, 70-62, over StMU. Haley Burton and Haley Fowler average a team-high 13.3 points per game. Also in double figures is Allison Szabo at 10.9 points per game. Kellyn Schneider is also in double figures in rebound at 9.2 rebounds per game.
 
LCU leads the all-time series at 2-0 with both meetings coming during the 2013-14 season. The Lady Chaps went 25-1 during the 2013-14 season and didn't suffer a loss in the Heartland Conference.
 
After tonight's game, the Jets welcome Oklahoma Panhandle State to Wichita on Saturday (Jan. 10) at 1 p.m. inside Fugate Gymnasium.
