Hays, Kan. – In tonight's nonconference matchup the Lady Jet basketball team lost 76-34 to the Fort Hays State Tigers. This loss moves the Lady Jets to 3-2 on the season and Fort Hays State moves to 5-0.
The Tigers came out red hot tonight taking an early 9-0 advantage over the Jets in the first quarter. They didn't look back from there, taking a commanding 28-9 lead after the first quarter. In the second quarter Fort Hays State outscored Newman 16-8, taking a 44-17 lead into halftime. In the third quarter it was all Fort Hays State, outscoring Newman 16-13 and also in the fourth 16-4, making the final score 76-34.
Kesha Buckner led Newman with 8 points tonight. She went 3-of-5 from the field and 2-of-2 from the free throw line. Buckner was also the team leader in rebounds with 6. She grabbed 2 offensive rebounds and 4 defensive rebounds.
Shaunice Robinson was second on the team in scoring with 7 points. She went 3-of-8 from the field.
Mali Wright was third on the team in scoring with 6 points. She went 3-of-6 from the field. Wright grabbed 5 total rebounds for the Lady Jets tonight as well.
On the night, Newman shot 12-of-52 (23.1%) from the field as a team. They struggled from behind the arc as well, shooting 1-of-18 (5.6%). A bright spot came when they shot from the foul line going 9-of-9. Newman grabbed a total of 36 rebounds on the night. The Lady Jets had only 5 assists compared to their 25 turnovers, which was huge issue.
Fort Hays State shot 27-of-65 (41.5%) from the field and also went 11-of-23 (47.8%) from behind the arc. The Tigers grabbed 44 total rebounds. They had 15 assists compared to their 12 turnovers. Chelsea Mason had a game high 25 points for the Tigers tonight. Paige Lunsford chipped in 11 points for the Tigers as well.
Newman will be back in action this Saturday (Nov. 28) at 1 p.m. inside Fugate Gymnasium. The Lady Jets will be hosting Southern Nazarene. There will be live stats and video for the game.
