WICHITA – The Newman women's basketball team shot 24.1 percent (14-58) from the field and totaled only 41 points in a 67-41 loss to UA Fort Smith on Thursday (Feb. 19) at Fugate Gymnasium. The Jets dropped to 7-16 and 4-11 in the Heartland Conference. UAFS moved to 15-8 and 13-3 in the Heartland Conference.
NU shot only 19.4 percent (6-31) in the first half to fall behind 36-22 after the first 20 minutes. The Lions shot 35.3 percent (12-34) in the first stanza. They hit double as many field goals in the half.
The Jets improved in the second half to shoot 29.6 percent (8-27). However, NU totaled only 19 second half points to 31 from UAFS.
Seniors
Shakira Raynor and
DeKendra Ledoux led the Jets with nine points. Ledoux shot a team-best 44.4 percent from the field, going 4-of-9 and 1-for-2 from 3.
Kesha Buckner totaled eight points and seven rebounds.
DaJah Thompson also pulled down seven rebounds to match the team high.
For the game, NU shot 24.1 percent (14-58) from the field and 26.1 percent (6-23) from 3.
Brianna Caldwell went 2-of-12 from 3. The Jets struggled from the free throw line, going 7-of-16 for 43.8 percent.
UAFS finished at 35 percent (21-60) from the field and went 7-of-23 from 3 for 30.4 percent. The Lions held a slight 46-44 rebounding edge. The UAFS defense forced NU into 18 turnovers while only committing nine turnovers. The Lions totaled 10 steals and four blocked shots.
The Jets end their 2014-15 home schedule on Saturday (Feb. 21) against Rogers State at 1p.m. inside Fugate Gymnasium.
