Men’s Tennis Defeats Regionally Ranked Ichabods

WICHITA – The Newman men's tennis team defeated Washburn, 5-3, for the first win over the Ichabods in program history on Friday (Feb. 20) at West Genesis. The Jets moved to 3-2 on the spring season.
 
NU, which is ranked No. 9 in the South Central Region, won two of the three doubles matches. The duo of Eduardo Santos and Freddy Sanchez, who are regionally ranked, won by a 8-5 score over Matt Barlow and Blake Hunter at No. 1 doubles. The Jets pair of Alejandro Gonzalez and Max Pyle lost, 8-6, at No. 2 doubles, but Jeff Wherritt and Evgeniy Kim got a 8-5 victory at No. 3 doubles.
 
The Jets won three of the five singles courts to get the 5-3 victory. A matchup of two regionally ranked singles players went in favor of WU's Martin Wieand at No. 1 singles as he defeated Santos in a close 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (13-11) match. In the No. 2 singles match, Gonzalez pulled out a 6-4, 6-3 victory. Kim lost by a 6-4, 6-1 decision in the No. 3 singles match to Hunter. Sanchez picked up a key three-set victory with a 4-6, 6-0, 1-0 (9-7) win at No. 4 singles. Diego Rojo Fernandez also pulled out a close match, winning 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-8) at No. 5 singles over Dario Munoz-Poletti. Pyle's No. 6 singles match went unfinished.
 
The Jets are back in action tomorrow in Tulsa, Okla. against Harding.
