ResultsFort Smith, Ark. – The Newman men's tennis team started the Heartland Conference season with a 6-3 victory at UA Fort Smith on Friday (Feb. 27) at the Fort Smith Athletic Club. With the win, the Jets moved to 7-3.
NU, which is ranked No. 9 in the South Central Region, started with one win in doubles.
Freddy Sanchez and
Eduardo Santos won, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles. The duo is ranked No. 9 in the region.
The Jets got victories at five of the six singles courts. Santos got a straight set 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles. In the No. 2 singles match,
Alejandro Gonzalez picked up a 6-4, 6-4 win. NU continued to cruise in singles with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles by
Evgeniy Kim. Sanchez lost at No. 4 singles, but the Jets won at No. 5 and 6 singles, both in three sets.
Diego Rojo Fernandez won 6-3, 6-7, 7-5 at No. 5 singles. In the No. 6 singles match,
Jose Enrique Coiras pulled out the win by the score of 6-2, 5-7, 6-1.
NU returns home for a match non-conference match against Missouri-St. Louis on March 5. The match starts at 12 p.m. at Riverside in Wichita.
