Jets Seek to Stay in Postseason Race at OPSU Tonight

GOODWELL, Okla. – The Newman women's basketball team looks to stay in the Heartland Conference postseason race this weekend with games at Oklahoma Panhandle State and Lubbock Christian. The Jets defeated both opponents in their first meetings this season.
 
The Jets take on the Aggies tonight (Feb. 5) at 5:30 p.m. in Goodwell, Okla. Live stats and video will be available for the game.
 
Newman is currently eighth in the Heartland Conference with a 4-7 record. However, they are only two games back from fourth place, and one game back from being in the top four for the conference tournament. LCU, Oklahoma Christian and Rogers State are not eligible for postseason play.
 
NU has won two of their last three games with the only loss a close 48-47 defeat to Texas A&M International. In their most recent game, the Jets defeated St. Mary's, 61-45, on Saturday (Jan. 31). NU won at Rogers State, 53-52, on Jan. 24 in their last road contest.
 
Sophomore guard Brianna Caldwell leads the team in scoring at 9.8 points per game. Kesha Buckner is second in scoring at 8.4 points per game and leads the team at 6.9 rebounds per game and averages 3.2 steals per game, ranking second in the Heartland Conference. Buckner scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the Jets' win over StMU. She added six steals.
 
The Aggies are currently 2-18 and 0-10 in the Heartland Conference. They are on an 11-game losing streak. The Aggies' last win was a 78-74 victory over Northern New Mexico College on Dec. 13, 2014. OPSU is 1-7 at home with its one victory on Nov. 18, 2014 against Barclay College. In their most recent contest, the Aggies fell, 87-51, at Lubbock Christian on Jan. 29.
 
OPSU's offense is led by Kiera Waters, who averages 13.3 points per game. Also in double figures is Tatyana Bell at 12.6 points per game.
 
In their previous meeting this season on Jan. 10 in Wichita, the Jets won, 67-52, over the Aggies. Caldwell scored a game-high 23 points, hitting six 3s. Buckner and Mali Wright each scored 11 points, and Buckner pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.
 
After tonight's game, the Jets travel to Lubbock Christian on Saturday (Feb. 7) for a 1 p.m. game in Lubbock, Texas. Live stats and video will be available for that game.
