ResultsWICHITA – The Newman men's tennis team improved to 2-0 on the spring with a 7-2 win over No. 4-ranked Cowley College on Sunday (Feb. 8) at West Genesis.
The Jets started by winning two of the three courts in doubles competition. At No. 1 singles, the duo of
Eduardo Santos and
Freddy Sanchez pulled out to an 8-2 victory. The loss at doubles came at No. 2 doubles where
Diego Rojo Fernandez and
Alejandro Gonzalez lost a close match to No. 17-ranked McCann Bell and Seth Moore. The pair of
Jose Enrique Coiras and
Zurab Tskhakaia got an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles.
NU won five of the six singles courts, including three wins over Juco nationally ranked opponents. Santos won in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2, over No. 11-ranked Erik Eldagsen. Gonzalez also got a win over a ranked opponent, defeating No. 17 Juan Bermudez by the score of 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. At No. 3 singles,
Evgeniy Kim knocked off No. 22 Marcello Balderama 6-2, 6-3. The lone loss in singles was to No. 34 Moore. In a tight match, Sanchez lost by a score of 6-7, 7-5, 1-0 (10-7). The Jets won the No. 5 and 6 matches. Rojo Fernandez was victorious 6-3, 7-6, at No. 5 singles, and Enrique Coiras won by a 7-5, 6-3 score at No. 6 singles.
The Jets are next in action on Friday (Feb. 13) against Rockhurst at 9 a.m. at West Genesis.
