SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Newman softball team couldn't get a hit against No. 9 St. Mary's and fell, 6-0, on Monday (March 23) in the final game of a three-game series. The Jets dropped to 6-23 on the season.
The Rattlers' pitching combination of Vianna Gutierrez and Veronica Garcia held the Jets to no hits in 7 innings. Gutierrez started in the circle and went 5 innings. She struck out six and had two walks. She forced five fly outs and three ground outs. Garcia came in for the final 2 innings and got six outs on four fly outs and two ground outs.
StMU plated two runs in the fourth inning with the first coming on a solo home run. The lead grew to 2-0 with an error from NU. The Rattlers added three runs in the fifth inning. A single scored the first run and then two sac flies made it 5-0. The final run scored on another sac fly in the sixth inning for the final 6-0 score.
Jensen Cromer started in the circle for NU. She went 6 innings with eight hits and five earned runs with one strikeout. She dropped to 3-9 on the season.
The Jets look to get back on track on Wednesday (March 25) with Pittsburg State at 3 p.m. at the Newman Softball Field in Wichita, Kan. The doubleheader is the first of five straight home softball games.
