WICHITA – The Newman men's tennis team's five-match winning streak came to an end today (March 24) with a 5-2 loss to No. 34-ranked Southwest Baptist at Riverside Park. The Jets dropped to 13-5 on the season.
Doubles competition was very close with the Jets winning one of the three courts.
Eduardo Santos and
Alejandro Gonzalez teamed up to get a close 9-8 win at No. 1 singles over Kristof Kinal and Sherif Abohabaga. Falling by a close 9-8 score was
Freddy Sanchez and
Diego Rojo Fernandez at No. 3 doubles to Yannick Doering and Alex Delote. In the No. 2 doubles match,
Jose Enrique Coiras and
Max Pyle lost by an 8-3 score to Chris Blodig and Torben Semrau.
Gonzalez got the lone single win. He was victorious by a 6-1, 6-1 score at No. 2 singles over Blodig, who is ranked in the central region. Kim lost to Abohabaga by a 6-0, 6-4 score at No. 3 singles. In the No. 5 singles match, Coiras went down by a 6-3, 6-3 score to Doering.
Jeff Wherritt lost by a 6-0, 6-3 score at No. 6 singles to Belote.
Two singles matches went unfinished. At No. 1 singles, Santos won the first set, 6-4, over No. 45-ranked Kinal, however, the match finished in the second set with the score 3-2. Fernandez's No. 4 singles match against Semrau also went unfinished.
The Jets are back in action tomorrow (March 25) against Metro State at Riverside Park in Wichita.
