WICHITA – The Newman men's tennis team defeated regionally ranked Metro State, 5-4, on Wednesday (March 25) at Riverside Park. The Jets got back on track and moved to 14-5 on the season.
NU started slow in doubles competition, winning only one court.
Eduardo Santos and
Alejandro Gonzalez defeated Nick Baker and Josh Graetz by an 8-4 score at No. 1 doubles.
Max Pyle and
Freddy Sanchez at No. 2 doubles lost by a close 8-6 score to Calum Hayes and John Qualls. In the No. 3 doubles match,
Evgeniy Kim and
Jeff Wherritt fell by an 8-1 score to Sam Stember and Ludvig Henrikson.
The Jets were strong in singles play, getting four wins. Santos continued his strong play with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Graetz, who is regionally ranked. Gonzalez lost a tight three-set match to Baker at No. 2 singles by the score of 7-6, 3-6, 6-4. In the No. 3 singles match, Kim won in three, defeating Qualls 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
Diego Rojo Fernandez cruised to a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles, and
Jose Enrique Coiras pulled out to a 6-1, 7-5 win at No. 5 singles. Pyle went down at No. 6 singles by a 6-3, 6-4 score.
NU is back in action on Saturday (March 28) against NCAA Division I Wichita State at 10 a.m.
