WICHITA – The Newman men's tennis faced a tough task, playing No. 48-ranked NCAA Division I opponent Wichita State on Saturday (March 28). The Jets lost by a 5-2 score at the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Center.
The Shocker swept the doubles competition to start the match. In the No. 1 doubles match,
Eduardo Santos and
Alejandro Gonzalez fell by a close 8-5 score to Guillermo de Vilchez and Illija Cuic. At No. 2 doubles,
Freddy Sanchez and
Diego Rojo Fernandez lost by an 8-2 score to Jocelyn Devilliers and Miroslav Herzan.
Evgeniy Kim and
Max Pyle went down by an 8-3 score at No. 3 doubles to Tin Ostojic and Sergio de Vilchez.
The Jets got their two victories at the top two singles spots. Santos dropped a close first set, 7-6 (7-2), but battled back to win set two, 7-5, and then the third set tiebreaker at get the victory at No. 1 singles over Tomislav Gregurovic. Gonzalez pulled out a tight three set match as well to give NU its second win. He won 7-5 in the first set, but dropped the second set by a 6-3 score. In the third set, Gonzalez won 6-1 to pull out the victory over Guillermo de Vilchez.
At No. 3 singles, Kim lost to Herzan by a 7-6, 6-4 decision. In the No. 4 singles match, Fernandez went down by a 6-3, 6-3 score to Devilliers, and at No, 5 singles, Sanchez fell by a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Sergio de Vilchez. Jon Meyer defeated Coiras after he retired in the third set.
The Jets travel to Kansas Wesleyan on Tuesday for a 3 p.m. match in Salina, Kan.
