Late Lead Doesn’t Hold, Jets Swept by Lady Chaps

 
WICHITA – The Newman softball team couldn't hold on to a one-run lead in the seventh inning and fell 15-8 in game two of a doubleheader against Lubbock Christian on Saturday (March 7) at the Newman Softball Field. The Jets dropped game one, 10-0. NU goes to 2-16 and 0-5 in the Heartland Conference.

The Lady Chaps used four home runs to pull away for the 10-0 win in game one. LCU started with four runs in the first, three runs coming on a home run to center field. An RBI single plated the other run in the inning.
 
LCU added three runs in each the fourth and fifth innings. Two home runs in the fourth scored the three runs. An error in the fifth allowed one LCU run to score and then another homer to center made it 10-0.
 
In the game, NU totaled only three hits. Jensen Cromer, Madison Bish and Kaitlyn Buck all went 1-for-2.

The Jets were three outs from the win in game two, holding an 8-7 edge into the seventh inning. LCU went on to score eight runs in the seventh and shut down the Jets in the bottom of the seventh to steal one from NU.
 
LCU knotted the score at 8-8 with a home run. With runners at second and third, an infield single put the Lady Chaps up by one at 9-8. The Jets still had a chance, but two more runs scored on a double that was right inside the right field line for an 11-8 LCU advantage. Another infield single plated one more run for a 12-8 score. With the bases loaded, doubled bring all three base runners home for the 15-8 advantage.
 
After the Lady Chaps scored one run in the first, NU went up 3-1 on a Breanna Pingry three-run homer to right center. Courtney Sartin and Mikayla Medbery scored along with Pingry on the bomb.
 
The Lady Chaps used the long ball to regain the lead at 6-3 in the second. A three-run homer of their own made it 4-3. Two more runs scored on a single and an error.
 
NU pulled to within one at 6-5 in the second inning. Taylor Schawe doubled down the line to score Bish. With the bases loaded, Kassidy Furr was hit by a pitch for an RBI, and Kaitlyn Padilla came home.
 
LCU scored one run on a wild pitch in the fifth for a 7-5 edge, however, NU plated three runs in the fifth to take a 8-7 advantage. Buck hit an infield single to score Alyssa Jarman with the bases loaded. Sartin singled through the infield to tie the score at 7-7. Bish came home to score. Pingry added to her big game with a sac fly to put NU up by one at 8-7. Taylor Mannis tagged up to score.
 
Pingry finished at 1-for-3 with four RBI and one run scored. Schawe was 2-for-4 with one RBI.
 
The three-game series ends tomorrow (March 7) at the Newman Softball Field at 11 a.m. Live stats are available for the game.
