DALLAS – The Newman men's tennis team couldn't overcome a 3-0 deficit after doubles competition and fell, 5-4, to No. 35-ranked St. Mary's on Friday (April 10) at the L.B. Tennis Center. With the loss, the Jets dropped to 16-8 and 3-1 in the Heartland Conference.
The Rattlers swept the doubles competition, winning all three matches. At No. 1 doubles, Adam Dockery and Brien Galon defeated
Eduardo Santos and
Freddy Sanchez, 8-3. In the No. 2 doubles match, Michael Maciel and Matt Banner won, 8-4, over
Alejandro Gonzalez and
Jose Enrique Coiras. StMU's Joshua Mosseri and Aldo Maldonado got a close 9-8 win at No. 3 doubles over
Max Pyle and Diego Fernandez.
NU was strong at the top singles, getting wins at No. 1-3. Santos won a tight three-set match 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 over regionally ranked Maciel at No. 1 singles. In the No. 2 singles match, Gonzalez was victorious by a 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) score. At the No. 3 singles match, Kim got a 6-4, 7-5 victory. After winning the first set, Fernandez lost the next two to drop a 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 match to Richard Foley at No. 4 singles. Sanchez won at No. 5 singles in a three-set match. He got a 6-3, 1-6, 7-5 victory. In the No. 6 singles match, Galon won by a 6-3, 7-5 score over Coiras.
The Jets are back in action tomorrow (April 11) against No. 36-ranked St. Edward's in Dallas.
