DALLAS – The Newman men's tennis team ended the regular season with an 8-1 loss to No. 34-ranked St. Edward's on Saturday (April 11) at the Arlington Tennis Center. With the loss, the Jets dropped to 3-2 in the Heartland Conference and 16-9 overall. NU will now prepare for the Heartland Conference Tournament on April 24 in Dallas.
The Jets lone victory came at No. 1 doubles.
Eduardo Santos and
Alejandro Gonzalez teamed up for an 8-4 win over Felix Bake and Ricardo Pineda. At No. 2 doubles,
Freddy Sanchez and
Max Pyle lost by an 8-4 score to Patrick Clynes and Maximo Agoglia.
Evgeniy Kim and
Jose Enrique Coiras fell by an 8-4 score at No. 3 doubles to Sotiris Tsioumas and Davor Ivkovic.
In the singles competition, NU faced a tough task, playing four regionally ranked opponents. Clynes defeated Santos 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. In the No. 2 singles match, Gonzalez lost in a tight three-set match. He lost set one, 6-1, but then rallied to get set two, 6-0. In the final set, Bake won, 6-0, to get the victory. Pineda was victorious over Kim at No. 3 singles by a 6-0, 6-3 score. In the No. 4 singles match, Agoglia defeated Sanchez 6-3, 6-3. At No. 5 singles, Ivkovic got by Coiras by a 6-4, 6-0 score. Tsioumas defeated Pyle 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6 singles.
NU is back in action on April 24 at the Heartland Conference Tournament in Dallas.
