Jets End Non-Conference Slate with Sweep of Bethany College

WICHITA – In their final non-conference doubleheader of the season, the Newman softball team swept Bethany College on Wednesday (April 22) at the Newman Softball Field. The Jets scored late runs to get a 4-3 victory in game one and then rolled to a 9-1 win in five innings in game two. With the wins, NU moved to 15-36 on the season.

NU fell behind 3-0 after three innings, but scored two runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings to rally for the 4-3 game one victory.
 
The Swedes went up 1-0 in the first inning on a bunt to score the run from third base. The Jets couldn't get the tag in on the runner coming from third base.
 
Bethany College added two more runs in the third inning. They scored both runs on a home run to centerfield.
 
An error in the fifth inning allowed NU to plate one run, and the Jets pulled to within one at 3-2 on a Breanna Pingry single to left field. Taylor Mannis scored on the RBI single.
 
The Jets added two runs, including the game-winning run, in the sixth inning for the 4-3 win. Mannis tied the score at 3-3 with a ground out. Mikayla Medbery came through with two outs, hitting a single to right to plate Delaney Hiegert for the 4-3 edge.
 
Kelsey Jones went 2-for-2, and Medbery was 2-for-3 with one RBI.
 
Katie Ingles came in in relief and got the win to move to 8-14 on the season. She went 2.2 innings and allowed only two hits with one strikeout. Jensen Cromer started with went the first 4.1 innings with seven hits and three runs with three strikeouts.

NU used a nine-run second inning to pull away for the 9-1 victory in the nightcap.
 
The Jets started the scoring with an RBI single to center field to drive in Jones for the 1-0 advantage. NU followed that single up with three more for four straight singles to pull out to a 4-0 lead. Kaitlyn Padilla singled to score Cromer for the 2-0 edge, and a single from Kassidy Furr plated one run. An error on the play allowed one more run to score for the 4-0 advantage.
 
Mannis hit an inside the park home run to up the NU lead to 6-0. Furr scored on the homer. Courtney Sartin added the second home run of the inning, hitting one out to centerfield for a 7-0 edge. Cromer registered her second hit of the inning with a double to left field to bring home two more runs. Buck and Jones scored for the 9-0 lead.
 
The Swedes got their only run in the fifth inning on a double down the left field line for the 9-1 score.
 
Jones started in the circle and was outstanding. She registered 11 straight outs to start the game. Her no-hitter was broken up in the fourth inning on a single up the middle. She finished with one strikeout and five hits allowed in 5 innings.
 
All nine Jets in the starting lineup finished with hits. Cromer went 3-for-3 with three home runs. Furr was 2-for-2 with one RBI.
 
The Jets play their final regular season games this weekend against Oklahoma Christian. The series starts on Saturday (April 25) with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. at the Newman Softball Field. Live stats will be available.
