DALLAS – The Newman men's tennis team defeated No. 2 seed St. Mary's, 5-2, on Friday (April 24) to advance to the Heartland Conference Championship on Saturday (April 25) at 2 p.m. at the Southern Methodist University Tennis Complex. With the win, the Jets moved to 17-9.
NU started by winning two of the three doubles courts.
Eduardo Santos and
Alejandro Gonzalez teamed up to win at No. 1 doubles by a 9-7 score. The Jets got the second win at No. 3 singles as
Evgeniy Kim and
Max Pyle won, 8-2.
Santos made it a perfect 2-0 day by winning at No. 1 singles. He defeated Michael Maciel in straight sets 6-2, 7-6. Gonzalez rolled to an early 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles to also go 2-0.
Diego Rojo Fernandez clinched the match with a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 4 singles to give NU its 5-2 victory.
StMU got the win at No. 3 singles, and the matches at No. 5-6 singles went unfinished.
The Heartland Conference Championship is Saturday (April 25) at 2 p.m. against No. 1 seed St. Edward's.
