WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Newman men's tennis team lost, 5-2, to No. 29 Cameron in the South Central Regional on Saturday (May 2) at Midwestern State University. NU finished the season at 17-11 overall.
The Jets started strong by winning two of the three doubles matches.
Alejandro Gonzalez and
Eduardo Santos won a close 8-5 No. 1 doubles match over Cameron's Felipe Oyarzun and Velasco. NU also got a win at No. 3 doubles.
Evgeniy Kim and
Max Pyle got an 8-5 win over Angelo Lencioni and Andres Velasco. In a tight No. 2 doubles match,
Freddy Sanchez and
Jose Enrique Coiras lost by an 8-6 score to Dennis Merdan and Joao Fazzendeiro.
In singles competition, the Aggies won courts 3-6 to get the match victory by the 5-2 score. Kim lost by a 6-4, 6-2 score to Fazendeiro at No. 3 singles. In the No. 4 singles match,
Diego Rojo Fernandez fell by a 6-2, 6-1 final to Mateo Velasco. Sanchez went down by a 6-2, 6-0 score at No. 5 singles to Lencioni. Cameron clinched the match win with a victory at No. 6 singles. Justin Bacui of Cameron won 6-2, 7-5 over Coiras in the No. 6 singles match.
The No. 1 and 2 singles matches went unfinished. Santos won the first set, 7-5, but then lost set two, 6-4. The match was in its third set with the score at 4-3. Gonzalez won the first set of the No. 2 singles match by a 6-2 score. In a tight second set, Oyarzun won, 7-6. The third set was tied at 5-5.
NU advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament for the first time this season. The Jets finished with a 17-11 record.
