OKLAHOMA CITY – Freshman
Emily Sarnacki won the No. 5 singles bracket at the OKC Collegiate Open during the weekend.
Tamar Tskhakaia and the double team of
Kevin Clack and
Daniel Smith won the consolation brackets. At No. 2 singles
Jose Enrique Coiras and
Diego Rojo Fernandez made the consolation finals, but didn't play out the championship.
At No. 5 singles, Sarnacki started with a close 7-6, 7-5 win over Jacquelyn Wright. In the quarterfinals, Sarnacki defeated Ana Cabrera by the score of 6-2, 6-1. The semifinals saw Sarnacki cruise to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Alexa Mentesana. The finals went to a third set tiebreaker with Sarnacki winning 10-6. She was victorious in the first set, 6-4, but lost the second set 6-3 to Sydney Brummett.
Tskhakaia won the No. 2 singles consolation bracket. She started with a 6-1, 6-1 loss to Brittaney McCassin, who won the No. 2 bracket. Playing in the consolation, Tskhakaia started with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Whitley Langford. Tskhakaia won the consolation semifinals by the score of 6-0, 6-2 over Caroline Abbe. In the finals, Tskhakaia was victorious in a third set tiebreaker 11-9. She came back after falling 6-3 in the first set to win 6-4 in the second.
Kevin Clack and
Daniel Smith won the consolation bracket in No. 3 doubles. After starting with an 8-6 loss to Curtis and Suico in the opening round, Clack and Smith won by an 8-3 score in the consolation bracket. In the consolation finals, the duo won by an 8-6 score.
At No. 2 singles for the men, Coiras and Fernandez advanced to the consolation semifinals, but didn't play the championship match. Fernandez lost in the first round by a close 2-6, 6-3, 10-3 score. He then won 6-7, 6-2, 10-3 in the first round of the consolation. In the semifinals, Fernandez was victorious by an 8-4 score over Ricardo Almeida. Coiras started with a 6-4, 6-2 loss in the opening round. In the consolation bracket, he won 6-3, 6-3. Coiras was victorious by an 8-3 score in the semifinals.
Arianna Raga made the semifinals of the No. 3 singles. She started with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Kristin Hillestad. In the quarterfinals, opponent Tadiwanashe Mrewa retired to allow Raga to reach the semifinals. In the semifinals, she lost 6-2, 6-4 to Alexandra Bowers.
At No. 1 singles for the men, both
Alejandro Gonzalez and
Eduardo Santos advanced to the semifinals. Santos started with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Przemyslaw Zielinski. In the quarterfinals, Santos was victorious in a close 4-6, 7-6, 10-6 match over Daniel Aguilera. The semifinals saw Santos fall by a 6-2, 7-6 score to Guy Iradukunda. Gonzalez started with a victory by injury default over Luis Romero. Gonzalez then defeated Stefan Gonzalez by a 6-2, 6-1 score in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Gonzalez lost by a 6-2, 6-4 score to Ismael Mzai.
Ajani King made the semifinals at No. 3 singles. The freshman started with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Carlos Rodriguez. In the quarterfinals, King defeated teammate
Kevin Clack by a 6-2, 6-3 score. In the semifinals, King lost by a 6-0, 6-1 mark.
In No. 1 men's doubles, Gonzalez and Santos made the semifinals. They started with an 8-6 win in the quarterfinals over Ackerknecht and Atturu. In the semifinals, the duo lost to Iradukunda and Mzai, who won the No. 1 flight, by the score of 8-5.
NU is back in action on Sept. 25-27 at the South Central ITA Regional in San Antonio, Texas.
