WICHITA, Kan. — Senior Shaunice Robinson dumped in 22 points and added five rebounds and four assists, but a second half charge was too much to overcome as Rogers State earned a 55-50 Heartland Conference victory Thursday evening at Fugate Gymnasium.
KEY SEQUENCE
After each team went over six minutes without a field goal, the Hillcats (10-5, 5-3 Heartland) broke a 35-35 tie with back-to-back 3-pointers, which made up the bulk of an 8-0 run that took things from a one-point lead for the Jets (9-7, 3-5 Heartland) to a 42-35 advantage for the guests.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-A free throw from Robinson was the first point of the game, and the Jets turned it into a three-point lead on a Lizzy Harrison layup before a Rogers State 3-pointer tied things up at the 6:50 mark.
-The first of two more freebies out of Robinson gave Newman a lead it would hold for over 18 minutes. A layup from junior Mali Wright followed by a 3-pointer from Robinson made it a seven-point run to build a 10-3 lead.
-Buckets from Robinson on each side of the quarter break, followed by a Wright Jumper stretched the advantage to double digits for the first time at 16-5 with 7:22 left before break. The Hillcats crept back into it, pulling within three on a three-point play.
-Four straight points from Robinson, including an acrobatic layup in the final minute, made it a seven-point lead again, but a 3-pointer from RSU with three seconds left made it a 24-20 Newman lead at the half.
-The Hillcats kept coming to start the second half, netting the first six points to take their first lead of the game at 26-24 with 7:02 to go in the third. A Natalia Hausmann layup off a feed from Cierra Tjaden tied things back up on the next possession and started a 9-0 run from the Jets.
-Robinson stopped an 8-0 stretch from the guests with two free throws with 1:04 left in the third to give the lead back to the Jets at 35-34 before the Hillcats started the fourth quarter off with eight straight to take the lead for good.
-The Jets pulled the RSU lead back to four points on five occasions in the final few minutes, but the guests were able to hit their free throws to hold the advantage.
NOTES
-The Jets scored eight of their 12 first-quarter points off of RSU turnovers. The Hillcats gave the ball away seven times in the first 10 minutes and 18 times for the game, compared to Newman's nine giveaways. The Jets scored 23 points off turnovers overall.
-Robinson scored 14 of her 22 points in the first half, where she went 4-of-5 from the field and 5-of-6 from the line.
-Junior Erica Olerich put up nine points and seven rebounds, hitting 4-of-5 shots and adding two assists, a block and a steal.
