LUBBOCK, Texas — Freshman Bria DeGrate led with nine points, but the Newman women's basketball team was not able to overcome a fast start by No. 2 Lubbock Christian in an 87-42 road loss Thursday night.
KEY SEQUENCE
Lubbock Christian (12-0, 4-0 Heartland) started the game 8-of-8 from the field and scored the first 21 points to jump out to an early lead over the Jets (7-6, 1-4 Heartland) would not be able to overcome.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Senior Ashley Gonzalez hit a jumper at the 4:11 mark of the first quarter to get the Jets on the board after LCU got off to its fast start. Junior Melody McLaughlin popped a 3-pointer less than a minute later to make it 23-5.
-Freshman Iva Krstevska hit another trey for the Jets and junior Mali Wright hit a pair of free throws followed by a Natalia Hausmann freebie to put together a 6-0 run over a span of 2:20 in the second quarter to pull within 37-14.
-Junior Erica Olerich started off the second-half scoring with a jumper at the 8:50 mark, and a layup from junior Cierra Tjaden followed a few minutes later by a Shaunice Robinson jumper pushed the score to 67-25.
-The Jets outscored the Chaparrals 12-7 in the fourth quarter, as DeGrate hit a pair of 3-pointers in the final minutes to send the guests on an 8-2 run to end the game.
NOTES
-DeGrate led the Jets with nine points, adding four rebounds and an assist. Caldwell netted five points and Wright, Robinson and Melanie George each chipped in four points.
-Krstevska and McLaughlin each pulled in five rebounds, and five other Jets grabbed four boards. Newman pulled down 18 offensive rebounds, the third straight game with at least 18 offensive boards.
-Thirteen different Jets saw the floor, with 12 scoring at least one point. Eleven players attempted multiple field goals and 10 grabbed at least one rebound.

The Jets close out their first roadtrip of 2016 by heading to Oklahoma Panhandle State for a 1 p.m. tipoff Saturday.
