Newman Back Home For Nonconference Games

WICHITA, Kan. – The Newman women's basketball team heads back home to Fugate Gymnasium after its thanksgiving journey to Alaska, riding a six-game winning streak to take on Central Christian Thursday and Southwestern College Monday.
 
The Jets (6-2) were in Alaska for the North Star Invitational over the holiday weekend. Newman took on the host team Alaska-Fairbanks to start the tournament, beating the Nanooks 71-61. For Day 2 of the tournament, the Jets faced off against Metro State, holding on to win a close 57-53 contest. Newman finally took on Stanislaus State in the final game, defeating the Warriors 71-57 to bring home the tournament championship.
 
The last two games for Central Christian (4-5) have been exhibition games, playing against Rockhurst University Saturday and the University of Missouri-Kansas City Tuesday. The Tigers last true game came on Nov. 22 when they took on Barclay College, winning 101-35.
 
The Moundbuilders (5-3) took on the College of the Ozarks Tuesday evening to start their week but fell 84-60 at home. Southwestern plays Kansas Wesleyan Thursday and Oklahoma Wesleyan Saturday before traveling to Newman to take on the Jets.
 
NOTES
 
-For the third straight tournament this season, Bria DeGrate was named to the all-tournament team at the North Star Invitational. She was also named as the MVP of the tournament, which is her second time capturing that honor. DeGrate is averaging 15.9 PPG, while having a 48.8 FG%, a 48.6 3PT% and leads the team in steals with 21.
 
-This six-game winning streak for the Jets is the longest since winning 11 straight games during the 2011-12 season.
 
-Central Christian is led by Piper Kalthoff who is averaging 19.6 PPG for the Tigers.
 
-Southwestern is led by Jordyn Miller who is averaging 15.7 PPG and 9.1 RPG.
