Jets Strive For More Success Into Conference Play

WICHITA, Kan. – After completing its nonconference schedule early this week, the Newman women's basketball team is gearing up for the beginning of Heartland Conference play by hosting St. Edward's Saturday and Oklahoma Christian Monday.  
 
SCOUTING NEWMAN
 
The Jets (10-2) hope to continue their success heading into conference play after finishing up the nonconference part of the schedule on a hot streak. Newman took on William Jewell Saturday at home, defeating the Cardinals 75-43. The Jets played their final nonconference game on Tuesday against Kansas Christian, cruising to a 109-45 victory over the Falcons.

The Hilltoppers (4-5) come into this weekend's game on a two-game winning streak. St. Edward's beat Schreiner at home 92-55 on Dec. 3 and took down Arlington Baptist 102-86 on Dec. 8. The Hilltoppers also played Division I Texas State on the road in an exhibition game on Saturday and won 65-51.

The Eagles (5-6) are currently on a two-game winning streak as well. Oklahoma Christian defeated Southwestern Oklahoma State 94-77 at home on Dec. 8 and then traveled to Northwestern Oklahoma State on Saturday, beating the Rangers 81-59. The Eagles travel to Oklahoma Panhandle State for their first conference game on Saturday before coming to Newman.

HISTORY BREAKDOWN
 
The Hilltoppers hold a slight 10-8 overall head-to-head advantage over the Jets, however Newman has won two of the last three games against St. Edward's. The Jets won the last meeting between the two teams at home last season, defeating the Hilltoppers 63-35, which was the largest margin of victory by either team in this series.
 
The Eagles hold the all-time series advantage against the Jets at 5-2 since joining the Heartland Conference. Last season Newman and Oklahoma Christian split its two games against each other. Both of the Jet victories against the Eagles have been at Fugate Gymnasium.
 
NOTES
 
-The Jets are one victory away from tying their Division II-era 11-game win streak that was set back in the 2011-12 season. The 10-game winning streak that Newman is currently on is the third-longest active streak in Division II.
 
-Newman as a team is the highest scoring team in the conference heading into conference play by putting up 76.9 points per game. The Jets also lead the conference in fewest points allowed with 50.5 points per game.
 
-With Iva Krstevska putting up a career-high 21 points against Kansas Christian on Tuesday, that makes four Newman players that have at least scored 20 points in a game for the Jets this season.
 
-DeGrate leads the conference in points per game with 16.8, heading into the first weekend of action.
