WICHITA, Kan. — Rallying to take the lead for much of the fourth quarter, the Newman women's basketball team saw Oklahoma Christian hit a game-winning shot in the final seconds to squeak out a 67-66 win in Heartland Conference play Monday afternoon at Fugate Gymnasium.
KEY SEQUENCE
The Jets (10-4, 0-2 Heartland) too, control thanks to a solid stretch over much of the fourth quarter, holding the Eagles (7-6, 2-0 Heartland) without a field goal for over 11 minutes leading up to the final minute of the game. There though, OC netted eight points, including a game-winning 3-pointer with four seconds left.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-A
Natalia Hausmann layup just over two minutes into the game pushed the Jets out to an early 5-2 lead, but OC jumped back out in front thanks to a five-point spurt. A pair of free throws from Hausmann with 6:04 on the clock tied it up at 7-all, but the Eagles answered and led for the rest of the opening quarter.
-
Bria DeGrate sank a layup on the first possession of the second quarter after hitting a pair of free throws in the final minute of the first to give the Jets back the lead at 17-16, but a bucket by OC started a 12-3 run that put them in control.
-The Eagle lead built as high as 10 at 37-27 with 1:38 to go in the half. A strong finish from Newman, with five points out of
Jazzmen Ortiz bolstering a 6-0 run, cut the deficit to five at the break.
-After
Hannah Alexander's bucket to open the third quarter cut it to a three-point game, OC managed to net seven of the game's next nine points to go up eight. That was its biggest lead of the second half though, and the Jets immediately started chipping away at it. Alexander, DeGrate and
Cierra Tjaden each had layups to make it a one-point game, and a basket from
Mali Wright tied it late in the frame.
-Another Alexander basket started an 8-0 run for the Jets that took them from down one to up 59-52 with 4:48 left in the game. The Jets maintained the lead until the final seconds, going toe-to-toe with the Eagles in what became a free-throw contest until the final dagger.
