WICHITA, Kan. – The Newman women's basketball team took on another nonconference opponent in Southwestern College inside Fugate Gymnasium Monday evening, cruising to a 79-51 victory.
KEY SEQUENCE
The Jets (8-2) were in for a competitive first quarter and most of the second quarter but went on a 16-0 run to end the first half to take a 41-27 lead at halftime, which resulted in a comfortable lead throughout the second half and eventually a win over the Moundbuilders (6-5).
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Southwestern would score the first basket of the game but
Mali Wright evened it back up with a layup early in the first quarter.
-Newman faced its biggest deficit of the game with the score at 15-10 with 4:23 to play in the first quarter but the Jets would fight back and get their first lead of the game when
Natalia Hausmann made a layup to make it 18-17.
-The Moundbuilders would take a 19-18 lead into the second quarter of play but a
Sheanna James jumper would tie the score up at 27-27 with 5:03 remaining in the second quarter.
-The Jets would end the first half on a 16-0 run to take a 41-27 lead into halftime. During the run James scored two points, Ortiz and Hausmann both added three points, while Wright and
Bria DeGrate contributed four points each.
-Southwestern would cut into the Jet lead a bit to make it a ten-point game at 47-37 and 51-41 in the third quarter but the Jets would close out the third quarter of play on an 8-2 run and take a 59-43 lead into the final quarter. During the Newman run the Jets were led by Wright with four points, while Ortiz and Hausmann both chipped in two points.
-The Jets would get out to a 20 point plus lead for the first time at the 8:05 mark in the fourth quarter when
Cierra Tjaden laid one up off the glass to make the score 65-44.
-Newman would get its biggest lead of the game at 79-51 with 17 seconds remaining in the game on a layup from
Melanie George, which resulted in the game's final score.

-For this evening's game the Jets tied their own NCAA Division II record for steals in a game with 19, Newman had 19 steals last season against Bethany College on November 30, 2015.
-Wright posted her first double-double of the season by recording 23 points and 10 rebounds.
-The Jets extend their win streak to eight games and pick up their seventh win by double digits during this stretch.
