BOLIVAR, Mo. — Suffering a tough loss and then dealing one out, the Newman softball team split a nonconference doubleheader against Southwest Baptist Saturday afternoon.
The Jets (5-9) scored a run in the top of the seventh to break a tie and earn a 3-2 victory in the nightcap against the Bearcats (5-9) after the hosts rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth after trailing all game to snag a 3-1 win in the opener.
After working across single runs in the third and fifth innings to manage a 2-2 tie, the Newman offense got to work when it needed to in the seventh. Rachael Withers led off with an infield single and was sacrificed over to second by Missy Swanson, and she scored when Delaney Hiegert dropped a bunt that the SBU defense couldn't handle.
The hosts picked up a two-out single in the bottom half of the inning, but Jensen Cromer closed out her complete-game victory by inducing a groundout to preserve the win.
Mikayla Medbery singled with one out in the third and eventually came around to score with the help of two errors to temporarily give the Jets the lead in the top of the third. Hiegert singled in the fifth and was plated by Medbery's sac fly to tie things up at 2-2. Taylor Mannis and Hiegert each had two hits in the game, while Cromer scattered five hits while walking one to earn her second win of the year.
A one-run Newman lead in the first game of the day wasn't as lucky. Mannis doubled in the first at-bat of the day and would come around to score on a single to right from Kendra Mendoza to give the Jets the early lead. Kate Smith breezed through the first five innings with that slim lead, allowing just three hits and two walks and never allowing a runner past second, but the hosts managed to put together three runs in their sixth at-bat to grab the win.
The Jets take a day off before getting back on the road, heading to Fort Hays State for a nonconference doubleheader Monday at 2 p.m.
