WICHITA, Kan. — Eduardo Santos and Jose Enrique Coiras teamed up for the win at No. 1 doubles, but the Newman men's tennis team fell 7-2 to Cowley County Community College to open up the spring season Friday morning at Genesis Health Club.
The Jets (0-1) saw Santos and Coiras pick up a comfortable 8-4 victory over Lucas Freitas and Nick Liddy. Andre Ebinal earned the other point for Newman, taking care of Jorge Godoy 7-5, 6-2 at No. 5 singles.
Matches at No. 1 and No. 2 singles both went the distance, although Cowley — which comes in at No. 6 nationally in the latest ITA junior college rankings — earned a pair of wins there. Alejandro Gonzalez fell 7-6 (6), 2-6, 1-0 (7) at top singles to Vincent Reynaud, the No. 11 juco singles player in the country. Santos dropped a 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (8) decision to Lucas Frietas.
The Jets are back in action in a week, heading to Missouri to face Lindenwood and Missouri-St. Louis Feb. 12-13.
