WICHITA, Kan. — With four of its players taking the court just freshmen, the Newman women's tennis team earned a nail-biting 5-4 victory over Cowley County Community College Friday afternoon at Genesis Health Club.
The Jets (1-0) got out to a strong start, taking two points in doubles as Kate Bugayenko and Kateryna Stoianova earned an 8-3 win at No. 2 and two of those freshmen in Emily Wise and Marit Lemmens got the 8-1 win at No. 3.
Needing to at least split in singles to earn the win, they did just that over the first four. Stoianova topped Eva Forneiron 6-1, 3-6, 10-3 at No. 2 and Wise got her second win of the day as well, not dropping a game in a straight sets win over Logyn Williams. With the pressure on, senior Ariana Raga bounced back from a first-set loss to win 2-6, 6-3, 11-9 and lock up the win over the No. 7 team in the ITA's junior college rankings.
The Jets are back in action in a week, heading to Missouri to face Maryville and Missouri-St. Louis Feb. 12-13.
