MAGNOLIA, Ark. — A tough second day at the SAU Softball Invitational greeted the Newman softball team, which took two losses, falling 2-0 to Delta State in the morning before dropping an 8-0 decision to host Southern Arkansas.
The Jets (1-3) outplayed the Statesmen (5-3) in many areas, but couldn't do the same on the scoreboard.
Kate Smith took the tough-luck loss in the first game, allowing just two hits and a walk over the course of six innings to the Statesmen. An error helped extend the first inning, with the first run of the game scoring on the play and the second coming on a sacrifice fly two batters later. Smith retired 15 of the last 17 batters she faced.
The Jets tallied seven hits, getting a runner on in six of the seven innings, but couldn't push a run across. Taylor Mannis continued her hot start to the season, going 3-for-4 with a double. Adrienne Esposito also added a double — the first two extra-base hits of the season for Newman — and Katie Ingles was 2-for-3.
In the second game of the day, the Jets went up against the Muleriders (4-0), who have yet to allow a run this season and have run-ruled each team they faced. Newman gave up just eight hits, but that included a three-run home run in the bottom of the first that got the hosts on the board quickly.
Mikayla Medberry and Kendra Mendoza each recorded a hit for the Jets.
Newman wraps up its first weekend of play with two more games Sunday, facing Lincoln at 10 a.m. before facing Southwest Baptist at noon.
