Jets Push But Can't Solve No. 1 Lubbock Christian

WICHITA, Kan. — Four players scored in double figures, but the top team in the country was too much to overcome for the Newman women's basketball team, which fell to Lubbock Christian 85-57 Saturday afternoon in Heartland Conference action at Fugate Gymnasium.

KEY SEQUENCE

The Lady Chaps (20-0, 12-0 Heartland) didn't jump out on a huge run as the Jets (10-11, 4-9 Heartland) cut the lead to 18 right after the half, but they did outscore the hosts 22-11 over an eight-minute span to seize control for good.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Lady Chaps netted the first eight points of the game before a Shaunice Robinson 3-pointer and a layup from Natalia Hausmann made it a 10-5 game with 5:31 left in the opening quarter. LCU responded by running off 10 straight points over the next two-plus minutes to make it a 15-point game.

-Cierra Tjaden hit a jumper and a 3-pointer—both on feeds from Bria DeGrate—around a bucket by Iva Krstevska brought the Chaps lead back to 10 points as the first quarter neared its end, but the guests scored the next 11 points over the span of three minutes to take control.

-Shots from beyond the arc continued to fall for the Jets, as Hausmann and Lizzy Harrison each hit one to make it 35-20 at the 5:35 mark of the second quarter. Another triple, this time from Krstevska, followed by a stick-back from Robinson cut the lead back down to 16 at 43-27 with less than two minutes left in the half.

-Robinson opened up the third quarter with a shot from deep and DeGrate hit another two minutes later to make it a 20-point game, but the Chaps slowly started expanding their lead, going as high as 37 before the Jets rallied late.

-The hosts scored the last nine points of the game over the final 2:42, with Hausmann putting back her own miss, DeGrate ending a fastbreak with a 3-pointer, Krstevska capping another fastbreak with a layup and Melanie George grabbing a rebound and a putback to end the game.

NOTES

-The Jets were hot from 3-point range throughout the first half, hitting 50 percent (5-of-10) in the first 20 minutes. After missing their first shot from deep, the hosts connected on four of their next five.

-Hausmann turned in her second straight game hitting double digits in points, netting 12 against the Chaps after going for 10 Thursday against Oklahoma Panhandle State. The junior also set a new season high in rebounding for the second straight game, pulling down a team-high nine boards Saturday.

-Tjaden was one of the busiest Jets in the first half, playing 18 of the 20 minutes and providing seven points, three assists, two rebounds and a pair of steals. She added two more helpers to finish with a season-high five assists for the second straight game.

-Krstevska set a new career high with 11 points on 5-of-10 shooting. The freshman added five rebounds, and three assists as well, while classmate DeGrate finished off her strong weekend with 10 points and three assists. Robinson netted 10 points and two rebounds.
