WICHITA, Kan. — Kicking off regional competition with a matchup of two of the top 10 teams in the South Central, the Newman men's tennis team swept doubles and snagged three more wins in singles to top Colorado State-Pueblo 6-3 Saturday afternoon at Riverside Park.
The Jets (3-5) saw doubles teams Eduardo Santos and Jose Enrique Coiras, Ajani King and Max Pyle, and Andre Ebinal and Diego Rojo Fernandez all pick up relatively easy victories as the hosts jumped out to a 3-0 lead to start.
Santos and Ebinal turned those doubles wins into two-win days with triumphs at singles as well. Santos made it three straight singles victories with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 1, and Ebinal fought back after dropping the first set to grab a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (11-9) victory at No. 2. Kevin Clack, who moved up to No. 5 singles, added the Jets' sixth point with a three-set victory.
Newman is back in action with a busy upcoming week, beginning Monday with its Heartland Conference opener at Dallas Baptist.
