Jets Force Extras But Fall At Oklahoma Christian

EDMOND, Okla. — A back-and-forth game saw momentum swing either way multiple times, as the Newman softball team scored in the top of the seventh to force extra innings before ultimately falling to Oklahoma Christian in their Heartland Conference series finale Saturday afternoon.

The Jets (7-18, 1-5 Heartland) took an early lead and then tied the game twice over the final innings, including when facing a must-score situation in the top of the seventh, but the Eagles (14-11, 9-0 Heartland) remained undefeated with a walk-off 4-3 win in the eighth.

Like they have many times this season, the Jets started the game off with a quick lead in the first inning, as Rachael Withers picked up an infield single and was moved up to second on Taylor Mannis' groundout. With two outs, Courtney Sartin smacked a single through the middle, plating Withers and giving the guests the 1-0 lead.

OC drew even with a run in the bottom half of the first, and took its first lead with another in the second inning, but Newman wouldn't go quietly. After getting hits in each of the second through fourth innings, the Jets quickly got down to their last out of the fifth before Mannis singled and stole second. That made it easy to score on Sartin's double to the wall in left center to tie things up at 2-2.

A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning once again gave the Eagles the lead, but facing the end of the game without getting a run across in the seventh, Mikayla Medbery started things off with a one-out double. After a pop out to make it two down, Mannis lifted a single to right that scored Medbery, and Katie Ingles came in and set the Eagles down in order in the bottom half to force extras.

Alyssa Taylor singled to start the eighth, and pinch runner Ellise McGowan was able to make it to third with two outs, but Newman wasn't able to plate the run. Getting their opportunity to walk off with the win, the Eagles got a two-out triple in the bottom of the frame and scored on the next at-bat to seal the win.

Mannis went 3-for-4 on the day for the Jets, while Sartin chipped in a 2-for-4 effort and two RBIs as the guests put up 10 hits. Kate Smith got the start in the circle, going six innings and allowing six hits and the three Eagle runs.

Newman is back in action at home Tuesday afternoon, hosting Northwestern Oklahoma State in a doubleheader starting at 3.
