DALLAS — In a big match to open up Heartland Conference play, the Newman women's tennis team battled back in individual matches and the overall team match-up to hand No. 42 Dallas Baptist a 5-4 defeat Monday morning in Texas.
The Jets (8-2, 1-0 Heartland) ran their winning streak to four straight matches by winning the final three singles matches on the court in tight fashion after the Patriots (4-5, 1-2 Heartland) built up an early advantage.
Kate Bugayenko and Kateryna Stoianova earned a smooth 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles, but the Patriots took the other two to take the lead heading into singles. Bugayenko followed that win with a straight-set victory at top singles, but the hosts followed with the same at Nos. 2 and 3 to move one point from clinching the win with three opportunities to do so.
That wouldn't happen though, as Stoianova bounced back from a loss in the second set at No. 4 to earn a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 win, and Marit Lemmens tied the score by winning a second-set tiebreak in a 6-3, 7-6 (10-8) victory at No. 6. The match came down to Ariana Raga at No. 5 singles, and the senior didn't disappoint, falling in the first set before bouncing back to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 and lock up the win for the Jets.
Newman stays in Dallas for a neutral site match Tuesday, when it will face off against Colorado Mesa.
