SHAWNEE, Okla. — Riding their season-long winning streak to six matches with a win Friday night, the Newman women's tennis team finished a tough week 3-1 with a win over East Central and a loss to Oklahoma Baptist this weekend.
The Jets (10-3) started off their weekend with a rain-delayed match against East Central forced to be played under the lights on a cold Friday night. That didn't seem to affect Newman, which earned a strong 7-2 win over the Tigers (5-6)
Kate Bugayenko and Kateryna Stoianova, and Tamar Tskhakaia and Emily Wise started out the night with solid wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles to give the Jets the early lead, and they went on to win five of the six singles matches to earn the win. Bugayenko, Tskhakaia and Wise all doubled up with wins in singles, and they were joined by Vanessa Brill, who toughed out a three-set win, and Marit Lemmens, who won in straight sets.
Newman ran into a stout lineup against the Bison (10-2) Saturday afternoon in a 6-3 defeat that snapped its win streak. Bugayenko and Stoianova ran their winning streak at doubles to seven in a row with a tight 9-8 (7-1) win, and Tskhakaia gutted out a tough 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-2) victory at No. 4 singles. Lemmens added the Jets' third point, snagging a straight-set win at No. 6 singles.
The Jets are back in action Tuesday, hosting Northwest Missouri State at noon at Riverside Park.
