Northeastern State Takes Doubleheader From Jets

WICHITA, Kan. — Facing off against some sturdy pitching that wouldn't let up, the Newman softball team fell in a nonconference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon to Northeastern Oklahoma State at the Newman Softball Field.

The Jets (12-25) were not able to get much going offensively against the RiverHawks (22-15), and one big inning in each game was enough for the guests to pull away for wins of 5-0 and 5-1.

After a leadoff home run to open the scoring in the first game for NSU, the Jets buckled down to get out of a bases-loaded jam and keep the RiverHawk advantage at just 1-0. Newman seemed to be starting off quickly as well, as Mikayla Medbery reached with a one-out single to right in the bottom of the first.

Both teams' pitching staffs would button down from there though, including NSU's Kayce Woodbridge, who didn't allow another hit to the Jets to preserve the shutout and the win. The RiverHawks had one more big swing of the bat, this time a three-run homer in the top of the fourth, that bumped the lead to 4-0 and forced the Jets to push that much harder.

The Jet bats were more active in the second game, as Newman cracked seven hits and worked four walks, but the hosts could only manage a lone run in the bottom of the seventh as a trio of NSU pitchers were able to stop the threats as they arose.

That run came across as Taylor Mannis beat out a ground ball to short stop for her third hit of the day with one out. After working back from an 0-2 count, Medbery followed with a double to the wall in left center to score Mannis the whole way from first and break the shutout, but the RiverHawks were able to record the final two outs and leave with a pair of wins.

Mannis went 3-for-4 in the second game, while Medbery went 3-for-3 with a walk and an RBI to go with getting the Jets' only hit of the opener.

Newman hits the road this weekend, traveling to Texas-Permian Basin for a three-game Heartland Conference series Friday and Saturday.
