AUSTIN, Texas — One big swing in the bottom of the first inning was enough to down the Newman softball team in its Heartland Conference opener Friday afternoon against St. Edward's, as the Hilltoppers picked up a 3-0 win.

The Jets (5-13, 0-1 Heartland) got a solid effort in the circle from Kate Smith, who gave up five hits — including a three-run home run that made the difference — in the first inning before settling down to allow just five hits over her final five frames against the Hilltoppers (13-9, 3-1 Heartland).

Mikayla Medbery was 2-for-3 with a double and Courtney Sartin added the Jets' other hit as Rachael Withers and Ellise McGowan each worked a walk. Newman put two on with one out in the top of the sixth, but a fielder's choice and a fly out ended the threat.

The Jets and Hilltoppers are back on the diamond Saturday afternoon for the series-ending doubleheader starting at noon.
