KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Eduardo Santos put together a perfect 4-0 weekend to help the Newman men's tennis team earn a split in its latest weekend trip to Missouri, as the Jets topped William Jewell and fell to Rockhurst.
The Jets (2-5) started the weekend off with an 8-1 victory over the Cardinals (3-8), falling at No. 2 doubles, 8-5, and sweeping through the rest of the matches. Jose Enrique Coiras battled for a three-set victory at No. 4 singles, as did Max Pyle at No. 3, who bounced back after dropping the first set. Santos teamed up with Coiras for the win at No. 1 doubles, and earned a straight-set victory at top singles.
Newman followed that up with a tough match against the Hawks (2-1) Sunday, with numerous close matches going the hosts' way. Santos worked for a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles, and breezed to an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles with Coiras.
The Jets face off against Colorado State-Pueblo at a neutral site in Emporia, Kansas Saturday before starting Heartland Conference play Monday at Dallas Baptist.
