KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Turning up the pressure on its latest roadtrip, the Newman women's tennis team dropped just two points in two matches as it picked up wins over William Jewell and Rockhurst this weekend.
The Jets (6-2), who have now won four of their last five, started the weekend with a 9-0 sweep of the Cardinals (4-6) Saturday afternoon, dropping just one set in the process. That lone set loss was suffered by Tamar Tskhakaia, who fell by the slimmest of margins in the first set at No. 4 singles (7-6 (7-5)), but the junior responded with an excellent finish, picking up a 6-2 win in the second set and taking the third-set tiebreaker 11-9 to earn the win.
On Sunday, the Hawks (1-3) were able to snag two wins from Newman in a match that was closer than the final team score. Kate Bugayenko picked up a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles, and Tskhakaia grabbed another three-set victory in a 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (7-4) win at No. 4. Teams of Ariana Raga and Vanessa Brill, and Bugayenko and Kateryna Stoianova each earned a win in doubles action.
The Jets continue in action next weekend, facing Colorado State-Pueblo in a neutral-site match in Emporia, Kansas Saturday before opening Heartland Conference play against Dallas Baptist Monday.
