Jets Turn Back Aggies For Series Sweep

WICHITA, Kan. — A superb effort from all three of its seniors helped the Newman softball team to its first series sweep of the season Saturday, as it topped Oklahoma Panhandle State 6-2 on Senior Day at the Newman Softball Field.

The Jets (18-32, 7-14 Heartland) saw Missy Swanson and Courtney Sartin combine for three hits and three runs in the win, with Katie Ingles adding another hit going the distance in the circle to shut down the Aggies (18-28, 6-15 Heartland) in their final conference game at home this season.

Newman got to work quickly in the bottom of the first, as Taylor Mannis was hit with the second pitch of the game and stole second. Mikayla Medbery bunted her over to third, allowing her to score easily on Swanson's single inside the bag at third. Sartin followed with a double to left center, and Kendra Mendoza's single to left center got past the fielder, allowing two more to score and stake the hosts to a 3-0 lead.

After a quick few innings, the Jets got back to work at the plate in the fourth, as Rachael Withers kicked things off with a walk and Delaney Hiegert adding a single. After each swiped a bag, there were runners on second and third with no outs, and they scored on singles from Ingles and Mannis to extend the lead to 5-0. Sartin cracked her second double of the day to start the fifth, and scored on Withers' single to make it a 6-0 game after five frames.

The Aggies would go on to score single runs in the sixth and seventh to get on the scoreboard, but it didn't faze Ingles, who allowed just four hits and a walk over her seven innings of work while striking out a season-high eight batters.

Ingles was also 1-for-2 at the plate, while Sartin went 2-for-4 with two booming doubles to the wall. Hiegert also had a pair of hits, going 2-for-3 with a run.

The Jets wrap up the home portion of their schedule Wednesday with a nonconference doubleheader against William Jewell.
